Memorial Lectures

Dr. S. V. Govindarajan Memorial Lecture

The lecture was instituted in 2003 in the memory of late S.V. Govindrajan, the doyen of Soil Science. He was born on 28th August 1913. Among the various posts that he held were those of Soil Correlator of Southern Region (1956 to1961) and Chief Soil Survey Officer of the then All India Soil and Land Use Survey Organisation (from 1961 until superannuation). 

During his four and a half decades of professional career, he contributed immensely to soil survey and soil fertility research and teaching. He published a soil map of India on 1: 7M scale in 1971.

This lecture is delivered by an eminent scientist working in natural resources management in the Convention of the Society held once in two years. Most appropriately, the privilege and honour of delivering the 1st lecture went to Dr. R.P. Dhir, an internationally renowned pedologist in 2004. The subsequent lectures were delivered by Dr. D.K. Pal (2005) , Dr. I.V. Subbarao (2008) and Dr. M. Velayutham, Ex-Director, NBSS&LUP, Nagpur (2010).

Dr. B. B. Roy Memorial Lecture

The lecture was instituted in 2007 in the memory of late B.B. Roy, an eminent soil scientist and a great teacher. He was born on 27th December 1912 in Dinajpur (now in Bangladesh). He had held many coveted posts during his illustrious life including those of Professor of Chemistry at St. Edmund’s College in Shillong, Assistant Physical Chemist in IARI, New Delhi, Soil Correlator (Black Soil Region) in Pune, Head of the Division of Basic Resources Studies at CAZRI, Jodhpur and Acharya P.C. Ray Professor of Agricultural Chemistry in University of Calcutta. 

He had made significant research contributions in the field of Soil Survey and Pedology. Besides, he has produced very many students who are today world’s renowned pedologists. He passed away in Kolkata on 24th April 2004.

An eminent soil scientist delivers the lectures in the Convention of the Society. Dr. G.S. Dasog, Professor and Head, Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, Karnataka was the first to deliver the lecture in 2008 followed by Dr. D.K. Pal in 2010.

 

Dr. J. L. Sehgal Memorial Lecture

The lecture was instituted in 2007 in the memory of late J.L. Sehgal, the pedologist par excellence and the founder Vice-President of the Society. He was born in Jalandhar on  7th September 1937. Dr. Sehgal had more than 37 years of experience in Soil Science with special reference to Pedology. For his contribution to soil survey in Iraq, he was honoured by the President, Govt. of Iraq during 1978-79. 

As the Director of National Bureau of Soil Survey & Land Use Planning, Nagpur (January 1986 to January 1996), his major contributions were publication of Soil Resource Map of all the states of India on 1:500,000/1:50,000 scale, Agro-ecological zoning and assessing Land Degradation Status. Among many honours he received, his election as Vice-president, Commission-V at the World Soil Science Congress held at Acapulco, Mexico is worth a special mention. He breathed his last on 11th April 2006 in Ludhiana, Punjab.

This lecture is delivered by an eminent Soil Scientist in the Convention of the Society. Dr. S.M. Virmani, ex- Principal Scientists, ICRISAT Hyderabad was the first to deliver the lecture in 2008.

Dr. S.M. Virmani, ex- Principal Scientists, ICRISAT Hyderabad was the first to deliver this lecture in 2008 followed by Dr. P.K. Sharma, Director Punjab Remote Sensing Centre, Ludhiana in 2010.
